Gary Furukawa brings two decades of experience in financial advice and planning. Before cofounding Freestone, he worked for 11 years at Salomon Smith Barney as one of their top financial consultants nationwide, managing assets of more than $500 million. As a Certified Public Accountant, and having worked for the Internal Revenue Service and Deloitte & Touche as a tax specialist, Gary brings insight not typically found in portfolio managers. A Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of Washington, he devotes his leisure time to his family and a variety of outdoor activities including tennis, fly-fishing, golf and hiking.

Nick Cicero started his career as the youngest member of the American Stock Exchange, where he traded equity derivatives for nearly a decade on a variety of listed and over-the-counter products. Prior to joining Freestone, Nick functioned as a consultant to an author of Alternative Investment texts, contributing most recently to Quantitative Trading Strategies by Lars N. Kestner. Nick holds the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation, and has a BA in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. Nick spends his free time following college football and playing golf and Scrabble with his wife.

My Perspective

Arthur Goldman contributes valuable knowledge to Freestone, with significant experience as a CPA, Certified Financial Planner, and an Investment Advisor Representative. Prior to joining Freestone, Arthur provided comprehensive wealth management, with an emphasis in estate and trust planning for high net worth clients for The Rainier Group. He attended Claremont McKenna College before graduating Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington. Arthur currently is on the Washington State Society of CPA's Personal Financial Planning Committee. His spare time is spent with family and pursuing athletic interests including basketball, fly-fishing, and coaching youth sports.

Bob Mellon began his career at U.S. Bank in their investment services division as a financial advisor. He then joined Salomon Smith Barney as an analyst in their Consulting Group Division, advising clients and financial consultants on investment advisor evaluation and selection. Prior to joining Freestone, he provided investment management consulting services to individuals, corporations, foundations, and retirement plans with assets totaling approximately $1 billion. A graduate of Portland State University and Northwest native, Bob resides in Seattle where he enjoys mentoring youth in neighborhood schools and pursuing a variety of outdoor activities.

My Perspective

Ken Miyoshi brings a global perspective to Freestone. He previously worked for Van Hedge Fund Advisors where he managed a fund of hedge funds for European institutional investors. He has served in consulting roles, both domestically and internationally, for organizations such as Ford Financial, Mazda, and PwC Consulting. Ken holds the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) designation, and has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia, an MA from Sheffield University, and an MBA from Vanderbilt University. He enjoys spending time with his family and staying active in various sports and outdoor activities.

My Perspective

Erik Morgan came to Freestone from Arthur Andersen where he was Senior Manager of Private Client Services and created their Northwest Investment Advisory Services. Erik brings extensive high net worth experience having managed in excess of $700 million in client assets. Prior to Arthur Andersen, he was with The Rainier Group where he specialized in investment management consulting and estate planning. Erik is a graduate of Washington State University, is active in the Investment Management Association, and is a CIMA candidate. Outside of Freestone he enjoys time with his family, golf, running, and skiing.

My Perspective

Christy Newton began her career in the securities industry with Merrill Lynch in Seattle over 25 years ago. She has more than two decades of experience in the fixed income markets, both taxable and tax-exempt, and has worked on the trading desks of several major Wall Street firms. Christy has extensive expertise in the areas of client service and fixed income investment management and brings this knowledge to Freestone Capital Management. A Washington native, Christy attended Whitworth College in Spokane and currently resides in the Mill Creek area. She enjoys sailing, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities with her husband and two daughters.

Kevin Patrick began his career at Merrill Lynch over 20 years ago and worked in both Seattle and New York City. His experience encompasses corporate cash management, corporate benefit plans and wealth management for high net worth individuals and families. Kevin's team at Merrill Lynch directly managed over $450 million in client assets. A Northwest native, Kevin lives in Seattle with his wife and two children and currently serves as an officer of the Magnolia Community Club, on a panel overseeing the Library’s For All capital improvement project of the Seattle Public Library system, and as an arbitration panelist on the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD) dispute resolution forum. Kevin and his family enjoy a range of the Pacific Northwest’s entertainment opportunities.

Gary Smart began his investment career as a research analyst and portfolio manager at First Interstate Bank (now Wells Fargo). There he helped manage the bank's trust and mutual funds and provided management services to high net worth clients. He joined Salomon Smith Barney to assist Gary Furukawa in managing his rapidly growing investment management business, and joined Mr. Furukawa again as a cofounder of Freestone. Gary holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation (CFA) and has an MBA from the University of Washington. He spends his spare time with his wife and five children and is actively involved in coaching youth sports and in the Boy Scouts of America.

Peter Wicklund joined Freestone after spending 12 years with Merrill Lynch advising affluent individuals and families. Peter began his career in the financial industry as an officer in U.S. Bank's Trust Department, where he managed both personal and corporate trust relationships. As a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) and a Chartered Financial Analyst designee (CFA), Peter has broad and extensive knowledge in financial planning and investment strategy. He is a member of the Seattle Society of Financial Analysts, a graduate from the University of Washington, and lives in the Madison Park neighborhood of Seattle with his wife and three daughters, where the family actively enjoys the Northwest outdoors.

My Perspective

Becky’s professional background reflects a combination of research and client service experience. Becky began her career in investments in Private Client Services and worked for Prudential Securities and Lehman Brothers in that capacity. Directly prior to joining Freestone, Becky was a bond analyst for GE Financial Assurance, where she helped to manage the $7 billion telecom and cable/media portion of the investment portfolio. Becky holds a BA from McGill University, an MBA from University of Washington and also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation (CFA). As an east coast transplant to Seattle, Becky avidly enjoys just about everything that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. She especially loves sailing and snowboarding with her family.
