As part of “Five Fridays,” Freestone’s employee-driven volunteer program, members of our Seattle team spent the morning at Discovery Park with Mountains to Sound Greenway, a local organization dedicated to conserving and enhancing the landscape of Seattle and beyond.
At Discovery Park, many areas within its 534 acres have been degraded by invasive plant species, which threaten the park’s ecosystem by eroding a healthy level of plant diversification.
Our group of volunteers rolled up their sleeves to help with the restoration efforts and spent the day removing invasive blackberry bushes to prepare the park for fall planting. Not as sweet as their berry byproduct, these bushes were sprawling, covered in thorns, and even hiding the occasional hornet nest. While they might not have been able to escape completely unscathed, many of our employees are native Seattleites and take great pride in supporting our beautiful parks.
